Standard AI

AI-Powered Checkout

  • Standard AI
  • Challenge

Support a cutting-edge startup as they bring autonomous checkout technology to market.

  • Solution

A collaborative, fast-paced approach to designing and building multiple products, allowing them to reach fundraising and growth goals.

  • Results

Since our work began, Standard AI has gone from raising $5.5 million in seed funding to $239 million in total funding on a $1B+ valuation - expanding internationally to clients like Circle K and Polar Park.

Walk in. Grab Stuff. Leave. When StandardAI first came to us, they had $5.5M in seed funding and a vision to create an autonomous checkout system that would enable grocery and convenience store shoppers to, as they put it, “Walk in. Grab Stuff. Leave.” With their backend technology in place, Standard partnered with Viget to produce a user-centric front-end for their suite of innovative AI-powered apps — in just 4 weeks — enabling them to get to market quickly. As a result, StandardAI was able to raise over $70 million combined in their Series A and B rounds. Over the years since, we’ve partnered together to update design, define new user flows, and create compelling UI as they expand into the B2C market. Now armed with $151 million in Series C funding, Viget continues to help StandardAI streamline and update their products to meet the needs of their ever-expanding audience.

  • $70M

After our development work, Standard AI raised over $70M combined in their Series A and B rounds.

  • PROJECT PLANNING Building at Speed

In our initial project, Viget’s task was to help StandardAI over the finish line by rapidly developing the UI for their suite of AI-powered apps. Our team of 4 developers and 1 product designer met StandardAI’s aggressive timeline through a series of incredibly fast turnarounds. We kept up the pace by organizing the 4 weeks into 1-week sprints; we included the StandardAI team in our daily standups and stayed in close collaboration with the multi-site team using Slack, Zinhub, and Google Hangouts.

  • (Left) The shopper experience in a tablet app for guests or a native mobile app for customers. (Right) The store manager app.
  • PRODUCT DEFINITION Three Apps Walk Into a Store

The 3 apps we developed facilitated 3 different types of transactions: an app shoppers could download on their phones that would eliminate the need to go through checkout; a “kiosk” app for guests who didn’t have the app downloaded; and an app the store manager could use to track and manage store activity. While each app had its distinct tasks to perform, it was essential that they operated in tandem, in addition to working with StandardAI’s backend APIs. By building the apps simultaneously, and designing them using the same logic, we were able to ensure that the apps not only functioned well by themselves, but also functioned together.

  • DEVELOPMENT APPROACH Quality Code

Throughout the process, we emphasized regular, rigorous code reviews, continuous integration, and automated testing. Our recommendation to build on React and React Native was based on a thorough understanding of the client’s needs, as well as in-depth research we completed at the beginning of the project.

  • "We've been digging into your code and we really love the way you do things. We're happy that we are getting something that not only looks good on the outside, but the inside as well."

  • STREAMLINING FOR THE FUTURE Designed to Grow

After several successful funding rounds and significant growth, StandardAI was ready for the next step - updating their shopper app to be used in a wider variety of contexts. Viget partnered with their team over 6 weeks to create concept designs for how their product could work in sports stadiums, university campuses, and new retail locations. Together, we tackled tricky problems like navigating between co-located retail locations and managing multiple payment wallets attached to third-party partners. This work provided their team with a foundation upon which they could iterate and adapt their product as they grew.

  • $1B+

After raising a $151M Series C, StandardAI achieved the coveted "unicorn" status of a $1B+ valuation.

Summary

Over the course of several years and multiple rounds of funding, our design, UX, and UI work with StandardAI has enabled them to accelerate development of their AI-powered checkout apps and expand into a wider market.
