Viget Labs - We Build Web Business

Summer Ruby on Rails (RoR) Intern

Viget Labs is a full-service web consulting and development firm based in Falls Church, VA, with a regional office in Durham, NC. We've been at it since 1999 and have earned a solid reputation as a rare firm that does both great design and development work when building award-winning web sites. We work with web start-ups (e.g, Squidoo, Loladex, ODEO, Razoo, PaytheFan), a number of non-profits (e.g., EarthEcho, Healthy Child, Holy Cross Family Ministries), as well as businesses in industries as varied as entertainment, hospitality, retirement planning, and telecom.

We're one of the few firms in the DC-metro and Research Triangle areas focused on Rails development and our work has earned us speaking spots at RailsConf 2008, RubyConf 2007, Lone Star Ruby Conference, as well as local events. Additionally, our developers have earned book credits and book deals. We're looking for interns who want to spend a summer with a talented team of developers who understand why Rails is better. Check out some of our current Rails projects here.

Our Ruby on Rails (RoR) Developer Interns will:

  • Have some experience building web sites in Rails.
  • Ideally, have some formal software development training.
  • Be thrilled to learn new technologies, tackle new challenges, and grow professionally.
  • Jump at the opportunity to work with industry leaders.
  • Enjoy Agile methods, Scrum meetings, and Behavior Driven Development.
  • Tap into their knowledge of XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, AJAX, and basic web usability standards.
  • Communicate exceptionally well.
  • Love the idea of working with our award-winning design team.
  • Have experience using Unix/Linux from a command-line interface.
  • Sometimes have experience with databases beyond MySQL (like PostgreSQL or Oracle).
  • Hate the term "Web 2.0," but love what it’s all about.

You must also:

  • Have some experience developing web applications.
  • Have some experience (formal or self-taught) in programming theory and/or application architecture and design.
  • Provide an error-free resume and detail your responsibilities and accomplishments to date.

Our internships are designed for talented, motivated, and ambitious students who plan to have a career as a web designer or developer. We expect interns to see this as a rare opportunity to work with industry leaders and prove themselves as potential future leaders. Like Viget employees, interns need to have a solid work ethic, serious professional drive, and a passion for the web. Our goal is to identify promising interns whom we can possibly recruit as full-time employees when they finish school; accordingly, preference will be given to rising seniors.

Interns will be expected to work 40 hours per week for a minimum of eight weeks. Viget believes deeply in knowledge-sharing and education; therefore, training will be a big part of the internship experience. However, we are interested in applicants who can provide value to projects immediately and who will work hard to ensure they consistently contribute to the company throughout their internship. If you plan to apply, please follow the application instructions carefully.
