Honing Skills with Professional Development

For creatives of all types, professional development and side projects are like exercise. The more you practice, the stronger you become in your skills and abilities. At Viget, we challenge ourselves to learn new skills and share with each other through articles, team discussions, and other professional development.

We even have an entire department dedicated to “pointless ideas” - a lab where we can let our creativity take the wheel and create projects that challenge us while making something interesting in the process. But what do you do when there isn’t time in the 9-5 for that? What can you do during those long projects that might not be the most engaging from a design or technology standpoint?

Below are some ideas on how can you grow as a creative outside of work, as well as some first-hand accounts of the positive impact that passion projects and professional development can have on your work.

  3. 3. Creative Confidence You do not gain credibility and confidence by simply wanting it or acting it, even if you are well-liked. You must have the hard skills and the track record to be considered credible.
  4. 4. An Interview with Tad Carpenter Through making, you find yourself. The more you make, the more you identify with who you are as a designer and creator. Take your time to learn and enjoy the place you’re at now.
  5. 5. Why ‘Side Projects’ matter? The art of succeeding slowly. Side projects are the opposite to the mantra of ‘Failing Fast’. Side projects are all about ‘Succeeding Slowly’.
