Let’s Talk About:

Designing with Time in Mind

We tend to talk about digital design as if it’s frozen in a moment or contained to a single screen, but time can be a powerful tool in crafting thoughtful user experiences. Consider those apps that onboard you successfully, introducing you to many new features over a relatively short period time.

At Viget, we crafted distinct content approaches for Politico around the idea of “stadium moments”. Visitors see the right content, in the right amount, at the right moment in time. Think pre-game, game-time, and post-game.

Community Thoughts on Designing with Time in Mind...

  1. 1. The Long Wow “Introducing the right experience at the right place at the right time can delightfully surprise customers.”
  2. 2. The State of UX in 2016 In his preview of 2016 UX trends, Fabricio Teixeira recognizes that workflows are becoming more linear, especially for apps that exist within narrow moments our busy lives (see Uber).
  3. 3. Meta-Moments: Thoughtfulness by Design On the flip side of ultra-efficient workflows like Uber, we have the idea of building in “meta-moments”, specific points where we nudge people to reflect on the experience at hand.
  4. 4. Disney's $1 Billion Bet on a Magical Wristband The Disney Magicband is one of truly great UX achievements of the last decade, and much of that success comes from building an experience across time, starting from the moment your customized bands arrive and following you through every interaction at the park.
  5. 5. Design is a conversation “Conversational UIs” are a popular topic these days, and these interfaces and interactions are essentially time-based.
