Book Review: “Graphic Design: The New Basics”
Since college I have been slowly building my own library of design resources. The explanation behind design fundamentals are inconveniently scattered over several volumes on my bookshelf. Over time the practice of using all of these elements can become second nature to a designer, sometimes making it a challenge to verbally break down the thought-process behind a piece of work. For me, this is when I turn to my design library for assistance.
There are a lot of great design books out there that debate the fundamentals of design, but many are confusing, complex, disorganized, and dated. I am happy to add Ellen Lupton’s new book, which is co-authored by Jennifer Cole Phillips, to my bookshelf. Yes, Graphic Design: The New Basics is officially my new design fundamentals go-to guide.
I am a big fan of Ellen Lupton. She’s a writer, curator, and graphic designer who leads the MFA Design program at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, where she is also the “Director of Design Thinking” (honestly, shouldn’t every organization have a Director of Design Thinking?). Her book Thinking with Type is the most practical publication out today on typography and it never leaves my desk. When I recently saw on her blog (which she co-writes with her twin sister) that she had a new book out, I quickly clicked over to Amazon and made the purchase.
Two aspects that set apart this book from others are its refreshing simplicity and its creative examples. Each chapter is broken into clearly defined subject areas, making finding what you need a snap. The copy is insightful and interesting (without a lot of pretentious fluff) and is complemented by visuals that range from online screenshots to her own students’ work. I was delighted to see a screenshot of Digg Labs’ Swarm application, which was used to illustrate “Dynamic Hierarchy,” a concept that is hard to explain but clearly exemplified online in that circumstance.
Overall I highly recommend this book as an addition to your personal design library. Whether you are a seasoned design professional or someone just interested in learning more, it serves as a fantastic and succinct resource for the fundamentals of good design.
Nice review, I think I might go over to Amazon and do the same. Interesting point too about building a collection of books on design; I’ve started to do the same. I think it helps enormously to have reference in print, even if there are plenty of tutorials and articles on the Web.
Thanks for the review. I am going to check that one out! I am always seeking out new resources.
Great review, just made me buy a copy on Amazon. ;) Thanks a lot and greets from Germany!
Hi,
I already have books from ellen Lupton, I’m really happy that this book released. It seems really helpful.
Do you think that I can find your book in Sydney?
Thanks in advance for your answer and congratulation.
great review - when you know you just know. took one look at the book and went straight to amazon & purchased a copy - enough said.
Love your blog design and your review of this book. After so many years of being interested in graphic design but not “getting it”, I’ve soaked up the pages online and am buying it in hardcopy now.
I get it, at last.
So big thanks to you and the authors.
This book seems very good. Great review !
A little word of the design of your blog: « He’s awesome ». I like the mix between good space + straight presentation and the drawing side. Very good.
Ellen Lupton? I’ll definately be getting this (especially at a bargain £14). Have been a fan since I got ‘Design it Yourself’ - it’s been invaluable as a source of inspiration.
Hi Samantha. Thanks for review. I am curious - you seem to be doing a bunch of reviews (15 under “Categories") - and none of the “Awards”. I am curious what were you envisioning when you created that category and what were you going to post under it.
As it be, I’m looking for new design resources, will check it out! Thanks
I’m stealing this off your desk.
Great book!! already bought it and it’s definitely not leaving my desk for sometime!! What would be ur TOP recommendation for a web layout design book??
Here’s my video flip-through of the book for those who can’t find it locally and want to buy online.
