We at Viget Labs are pleased and proud that Duke.edu earned a Bronze Award in the Complete Institutional Web Site category of the 2010 CASE Circle of Excellence awards.

Viget worked last fall with Duke University's Office of News and Communications to design the home page and secondary Spotlight pages for the university's web site.

CASE (The Council for Advancement and Support of Education) received 54 entries in this category and awarded one gold, one silver, and two bronze prizes. The Circle of Excellence awards program acknowledges great achievements by institutions of higher education.

One of the judges, Michael Stoner, described on his blog how the entries were evaluated. Among the criteria on which the sites were judged were the following elements:

  • sound information architecture, navigability, usability and search
  • a clear identity that is appropriate to the organization
  • an appropriate level of innovation (Designers pushed the envelope without diminishing the findability or readability of content.)
  • standardization of interface across the site

We kept all these elements and more in mind as we worked with the Duke team to redesign Duke.edu, especially the standardization of interface across the site, which we took one step further with the brand bar concept we developed to extend that standardization to other sites under the Duke University umbrella.

Congratulations to everyone involved in the strategy, design, development, and content creation for Duke.edu. We're honored to be able to share this accomplishment with such a deserving group of people.

Yesterday, the great web educator Jeff Brown brought his class of 25 Damascus High School students to Viget's headquarters to see what it's like to work at a "real" web services company.  We had fun showing off the office, chatting about our jobs, and giving lofty, (hopefully) inspiring advice about life and careers. I enjoyed sharing the Viget story and showing them around. Everyone else seemed to enjoy it, too.

We wanted to do more than just talk, though.  To that end, Brian and Jackson walked the group through a user experience design exercise. Anjali explained our marketing services and gave a behind-the-scenes view of both Google Analytics and an AdWords campaign. Rob showed off his latest iPhone site design (the yet-to-be-launched new Pointless Corp. site). Owen, Trevor, and Blair shared some other work from Viget's design lab. "They were great," Blair said. "And it gave me great perspective on my own professional development. It was inspiring to have them around for the day."

This year, the Art Directors Club of Metropolitan Washington, an organization in which several Viget folks are actively involved, expanded the interactive side of their Annual Show. We're not really into the award scene here at Viget, but we're big supporters of ADCMW's recent emphasis on the DC web community, and were excited to be involved.

Four pieces of our work were selected for inclusion in the show, the most of any interactive agency:

Saturday night, three of us went down to the National Press Club to view the show, which included some really great work from a lot of area agencies, and a great dinner with other designers who had work in the show. We also took home a Silver Lightbulb award for SpeakerRate, the only such award to go to an interactive work, which was a welcome surprise.

Also, separate congratulations to Viget designer Samantha Warren and friend-of-the-family Ali Felski for having their wonderful personal sites win a spot in the exhibit as well.

Thanks to the Art Directors Club for hosting the event and to the panel of great judges on the interactive side (Dan Mall, Leslie Jensen-Inman, and Ian Coyle) for participating. We're looking forward to watching and helping ADCMW grow to become an integral part of DC's web community.
